At least six people were killed and many more injured in a shooting incident on Saturday (April 9) at a shopping mall in the Dutch town of Alphen aan den Rijn.

"Till now, we counted six dead, four seriously injured, five others injured. There are at least two minor injuries but probably more because some people didn't wait for the rescue team and went to their own doctor," the mayor of Alphen aan den Rijn, Bas Eenhoorn, said at a news conference.

"I (saw) a man running up to me, white, Caucasian, quite long curly hair, wearing something that looked like camouflage pants. The man was carrying a machine gun. I ran back inside and closed the door and the shutters," one eyewitness said, describing the gunman.

Dutch television channel NOS cited other witnesses as saying the man later shot himself in the head with a second weapon, a pistol.

Alphen aan den Rijn, with a population of 72,000, is 46 km south of Amsterdam.
