Atlas V rocket launches into space

The unmanned Atlas V rocket launches into space carrying a military satellite.

CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA, UNITED STATES (MAY 07, 2011) NBC - The unmanned Atlas V rocket launched into space on Saturday (May 7), a day after the launch attempt was canceled by bad weather.

The rocket is carrying the (SBIRS GEO-1) Space-Based Infrared System geosynchronous satellite.

The satellite, SBIRS GEO-1, is the first dedicated spacecraft to be launched as part of the Space Based Infrared System.

The spacecraft will be used to monitor the Earth using infrared sensors in order to detect and track missile launches.
