Khan was arrested last November within days of arriving in Syria to volunteer as an emergency doctor. He died in jail on Monday (December 16), his mother said.

There have been conflicting explanations for his death.

Khan was expected to be released this week. But when his mother went to visit him in prison inDamascus on Monday she was told he had died.

Syrian government official said Khan, a 32-year-old father of two, had committed suicide. But his brother said that was impossible, given that he was preparing to go home with his mother.

Dr. Khan claimed he had been tortured while being detained without charge and held for much of the time in isolated, squalid conditions.
