British mother Lianne Smith confesses to smothering her two small children as her trial gets underway in Spain.

GIRONA, SPAIN (JUNE 18, 2012) (FORTA) -
Lianne Smith, the British mother arrested two years ago for the suffocation of her two children in the Spanish holiday resort Lloret de Mar, confessed to the crime on Monday (June 18).
Smith made the confession on the first day of the trial into the murders at the Girona Provincial Court, in north east Spain.

The 45-year-old was arrested on May 18, 2010 for the murder of her daughter Rebecca, aged five, and 11-month-old son, Daniel.

The two children were found dead at a room at the Hotel Miramar, some 40 miles (64 km) northeast of Barcelona.

Smith is seeking an acquittal on mental grounds.

Her lawyers argue she was suffering from psychosis at the time of the murder after the arrest days earlier of her partner Martin Smith, who was extradited on a rape charge he was later charged for.

In January this year Martin Smith was found hanged in his cell at the Strangeways prison in Manchester.
