"Only a few moments. Just a few moments and we would all be saved, but I accidentally let go of my child's hand. I guess it was her sacrifice because she knew that if I kept carrying her, both of us would have drowned."

This view from space captured the deadly typhoon - known as Haiyan - raging across the region on Saturday.

After leaving at least 10,000 people dead in the Philippines, Haiyan downgraded into a tropical storm before making landfall in Vietnam on Monday.

There is lashed the shores with gusts and floodwaters.

"The wind was very gusty during the night, my roof was making crackling noises because of the powerful storm. This is the biggest storm in years."

Hundreds of thousands were evacuated from the coast.

Back in the Philippines, residents are pleaing for help, scavenging for food, water and medicine.

The country's president has declared a state of national calamity.
