Wearing traditional robes with a scarf pulled over his head, a heavy bearded, bespectacled Saif al-Islam sits on board plane bound for Zintan after his capture in the southern Libyan desert.

ZINTAN, LIBYA (NOVEMBER 19, 2011) (REUTERS) - Muammar Gaddafi's son and heir apparent Saif al-Islam has been detained in the southern desert, Libya's interim justice minister and other officials said on Saturday (November 19).

They said Saif al-Islam and several bodyguards, but no other senior figures from the ousted administration, had been taken near the town of Obari by fighters based in the western mountain town of Zintan

Saif wore traditional robes with a scarf pulled over his face. His man's thumb, index and another finger were heavily bandaged. One of his captors said Saif al-Islam had been injured in a NATO air strike some weeks ago.

He and his four, armed male companions had been captured without a fight.

A spokesman for Libya's outgoing interim government said on Saturday Saif al-Islam Gaddafi would be tried in the country rather than being sent to The Hague.
