A woman has died and 10 other people, including seven children, were hurt in a hit and run rampage by a man driving a van in what eyewitnesses said appeared to be a deliberate attempt to harm people.

CARDIFF, WALESUNITED KINGDOM (OCTOBER 19, 2012) (ITN) -  A 31-year-old man was being questioned by police in Cardiff, Wales, on Saturday (October 20) over a hit and run rampage in which a van hit pedestrians, causing the death of one woman.

The dead woman - named locally as Karina Menzies, a 32-year-old mother - was among seven children and four adults hurt during the crime spree on Friday (October 19).

She died after being knocked down outside a fire station in the Welsh capital.

Eyewitnesses told of their horror after watching a van mount the kerb at a number of locations in Cardiff in what appeared to be a deliberate attempt to harm people.

Senior investigating officer Detective Superintendent Paul Hurley said: "There is evidence to suggest that the person who we have in custody has physically assaulted people outside of the vehicle, that is correct. What I can say is that we are aware that the suspect has assaulted people outside of his vehicle."

South Wales Police said the suspect was arrested on Friday and is being questioned on suspicion of murder.
