HERMOSILLO, SONORA, MEXICO (SEPTEMBER 7, 2012)(SONORA PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE HANDOUT) - Mexican authorities on Friday (September 7) said police found an arsenal of weapons in the house of a family of suspected drug traffickers after the 9-year-old son took a gun to school, leading police to the house.
Police in Hermosillo find a massive arsenal in a family home after their 9-year old took a gun to school.
Classmates of the youngster spotted a loaded pistol in his school bag and the school alerted authorities, police in the northern city of Hermosillo, in Sonora state, said in a statement Friday.
Police raided the boy's home after confiscating the weapon, which was loaded with bullets known as "cop killers" designed to penetrate bullet-proof vests, he added.
Francisco Javier Gomez Izaguirre, the Sonora Prosecutor for the Defence of Children and Family, said that authorities would investigate the child's family situation to see what could be done.
"It was a family environment. It was a family environment, that's what I can tell you. Because of laws set forth by the Prosecutor for the Defence of Family, we are obligated to investigate the family environment to see what their situation was. From the point of view of stability, emotions, family, how the family lives, who they are, and what can be done so that the minor is integrated into the family," he said.
At the house, police found 13,000 rounds of ammunition, various pistols and rifles, including AK-47s, as well as an Uzi submachine gun. There were also military uniforms, ballistic vests, dozens of portable radios and two money counting machines.
An armed man at the house saw the police coming and managed to escape. A woman inside was arrested. The boy was taken into the care of social workers, the statement said.
