An anti-mafia police operation which resulted in the arrest of 20 people has revealed that a mafia member was fed to pigs alive, Italian police say.
(POLICE HANDOUT) - "Operazione Erinni", an anti-mafia operation in the south of Italy, has revealed that a mafia clan last year fed a rival mobster to pigs alive, the Italian police said.
The police of the southern Reggio Calabria province investigating a number of murders found thatFrancesco Raccosta, a member of a local crime syndicate, had been fed to pigs while he was still alive.Unbeknownst to one of the killers, a phonecall in which he boasted about how he'd enjoyed hearing Raccosta screaming, was intercepted by the police.
The murder of Raccosta demonstrated the "utmost ruthlessness and cruelty" of the mafia clans, the police said in a statement.
He is believed to have been killed due to decades' long and deadly rivalry between two clans, the Bonarrigo-Mazzagatti-Polimeni and the Ferraro-Raccosta syndicate which he was part of.
