NASA releases video compiled of images captured from the International Space Station showing the Aurora Borealis over North America.
IN SPACE (FILE - JANUARY 31, 2012) (NASA) - NASA released a series of videos on Thursday (March 15) compiled of images captured from the International Space Station (ISS).
Lights, shimmering over North America. One shows a moving star field and another the city lights of the northern United States and Canada.
The images were captured by the crew of Expedition 30 on board the ISS, between January 25 and February 26, 2012. The videos were created by the Crew Earth Observations team at Johnson Space Center from series of the still images.
The Aurora Borealis can be seen above Earth's northernmost and southernmost regions. The auroral displays are associated with the solar wind -- electrically charged particles continuously spewing outward from the sun. Earth's magnetic field lines reach far out into space as they store energy from the solar wind.
