Wardens at a prison in Colombia seize a carrier pigeon being used by inmates to transport drugs.
BUCARAMANGA, COLOMBIA. (JANUARY 18, 2011) RCN TV - A drug-smuggling pigeon WAS captured outside a Colombian prison, local police confirmed on Tuesday (January 18).The pigeon was attempting to fly into a prison in Bucaramanga, in the country's north-east, with 45 grams (1.6 ounces) of marijuana attached to its body, but didn't make it to its destination. General Jose Angel Mendoza, Commander of Bucaramanga Metropolitan Police, confirmed the plan.
"This is a new case of criminal ingenuity. They were trying to smuggle drugs into Bucaramanga prison by using messenger pigeons," said General Mendoza.
Police found the grounded bird close to the prison and believe it had been trained by prisoners or their associates.
"We found the bird about a block away from the prison trying to fly over with a package, but due to the excess weight it was impossible for the bird to accomplish the objective and it ended up being caught by the police," said General Jose Angel Mendoza.
Police said carrier pigeons have been used in the past to transport mobile phone sim cards to inmates.
