Last part of Latvian supermarket roof collapses - no further injuries.
RIGA, LATVIA (NOVEMBER 23, 2013) (REUTERS) - The last part of a supermarket roof collapsed to the ground in the Latvian capital on Saturday (November 23) but there were no further injuries in a disaster that has so far claimed 54 lives.
Apart from a temporary suspension over safety fears rescue workers have been working non-stop digging in the wreckage for those who might still be trapped.People fled a nearby building when they heard the noise of the final bit of the roof coming down.
During the night rescuers found one more dead body in the debris. The number of victims has reached 54 with 22 injured people being treated in hospital, authorities said.
Relatives and friends of victims continue to visit the scene of the collapse, placing candles and flowers around the perimeter of the site.
Several people are still waiting for information about their loved ones. It is believed there are still an unknown number of people trapped or lying dead amongst the debris. Saturday, Sunday and Monday have been declared official days of mourning in the former Soviet Republic.
