Russia blocks yogurt for U.S. Olympic athletes.
NEW BERLIN, NEW YORK AND TWIN FALLS, IDAHO, UNITED STATES (CHOBANI HANDOUT) - A food fight is afoot in Russia. The Russian government has blocked a shipment of 5,000 single-serve cups of blueberry, strawberry and peach Chobani Greek Yogurt as well as multi-serve containers of plain Chobani for smoothies.
Russia will not permit the yogurt from entering the country because the proper Customs certifications have not been provided by the U.S.The yogurt is currently being held near Newark International Airport in New Jerseyas it awaits permission to travel.
U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, who represents New York, where Chobani is headquartered, has called on the Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and the head of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach to permit the yogurt inside Russia so U.S. athletes can eat the protein-rich food.
Chobani is a sponsor of the U.S. Olympic Team.
The Olympic Opening Ceremony is scheduled for Friday (February 7).
