China-Blind Entrepreneur -- Blind man providing computer repair service inShanxi
China Central Television (CCTV) - A 37-year-old man in north China's Shanxi Province has amazed nearby communities in providing a computer repair service despite being blind, as his neighbors continue to heap praise on the individual.
December 3 marks the International Day for People with Disabilities, and the recognition day has been observed by the United Nations since 1992. It advocates understanding of people with disability and encourages support for their dignity, rights and well-being.Thirty-seven year-old Gao Xujun, who lost both of his sight at just three years of age, is busy fixing computers for others who pay for his services.
Li Xiaoli, who is also blind and is able to use a computer with the help of a screen-reading software, receives a complimentary service from Gao - several times until now. Gao's service is however, always free of charge for people like Li Xiaoli.
"I needed my computer fixed before. But I was always told that my computer needed component parts changed. Later, I found Gao's contact details from the internet. He's an honest person and he fixed my computer for free," Li Xiaoli praised Gao.
By listening to the way the computer runs, Gao Xujun figured out the problem, he says. When the computer was repaired, Gao's driver drove him back to one of his stores in Taiyuan. The store not only repairs computers but also sells other electronic goods.
Gao learned to fix computers in 2003 with also the help of the screen- reading software. It was about a decade ago when Gao Xujun first tried his hand at repairing computers, he says. Now he owns four stores across the province and his business has even expanded to the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Henan Province. In the opinion of many, this is mission impossible.
"I couldn't believe it when I first heard about it. Then I knew it was true when I met Gao Xujun. I think it's incredible," said a seller in a neighboring store.
"I like fixing things. I chose to learn how to repair computers because they're small and relatively easy to handle. And all my work relies on my senses of hearing and touch," said Gao.
Although blind, Gao has always made his own money. He used to be a street vendor and fixed bicycles and home appliances. Gao Xujun said now he wants to continue to work on providing a better computer repair service, and he also has plans to expand into other fields of business.
"I think we blind people should be strong and self-reliant. You can do whatever you want to do, if you want to and determined," Gao said, on providing a note of inspiration for others in the same situation.
