The Aurora, Colorado theater where twelve people were killed during a "Batman" premiere to reopen on January 20.
AURORA, COLORADO, UNITED STATES (JULY 20, 2012) (NBC) - Cinemark, the parent company that owns the Century 16 Theater in Aurora,Colorado where twelve people were killed during a movie premiere announced Wednesday (December 5) they will reopen the theater January 20.
The theater was the sight of a mass shooting where 12 people were killed and 58 were injured during July 20th premiere of "Dark Knight Rises".Cinemark CEO Tim Warner said in a letter written to Aurora, Colorado Mayor Steve Hogan that Cinemark plans to host an event January 17 to invited members of the community, "especially those affected by the tragedy."
City of Aurora officials said they conducted a survey on Facebook asking citizens what should be done with the building. The officials say the majority of respondents said they supported reopening the theater.
Not everyone is happy with the announcement. Eriz Scott whose son Jarrell Brooks was shot in the thigh during the shooting spree, said she wished the theater was not reopening.
"In previous discussions, with other victims and their families, we all agreed that we don't want it. We would prefer for it to be torn down," Scott said.
The theater has been renamed to Century Theater X-D and has been remodeled. Blueprints show there will be significant changes in theater 9, where the shooting took place, which will now have few seats and a larger screen.
The theater will offer free movies from January 18 to the 20 to the public as part of the reopening.
