Police produce second suspect in gang rape of a photojournalist in Mumbai in a local court.
MUMBAI, MAHARASHTRA, INDIA (AUGUST 24, 2013) (ANI) - Police produced the second suspect in gang rape of a photojournalist in Mumbai in a local court on Saturday (August 24).
Mumbai police commissioner, Satyapal Singh, said suspect had confessed to his crime.
"He has also confessed to his crime. We have also got real name of one of the accused. Our investigation is going in right direction. I am confident that rest of the accused will be arrested soon," said Singh. The first accused in the case was nabbed on Friday (August 23) and he had also admitted to his crime as well as identified the other four.
A massive hunt is on for the remaining three perpetrators.
The gang-rape of a photo journalist in her early 20s in Mumbai triggered disgust and outrage across India, evoking comparisons to a similar assault in New Delhi in December that led to nationwide protests and a revision of the country's rape laws.
The attack took place in an abandoned textile mill in Lower Parel, a former industrial district that is now one of the city's fastest-growing neighbourhoods of luxury apartments, malls and bars. The woman was out on assignment with a male colleague.
The victim was admitted to hospital in south Mumbai and is said to be stable.
Women's safety in India has been in the spotlight this year following the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old student on a moving bus in New Delhi in December, which led thousands of Indians to take to the streets in protest. The woman died of her injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital.
