Chilean authorities transfer bodies of French nationals to Puerto Montt after the two mountaineers plunged to their deaths while climbing the Osorno volcano.
OSORNO, CHILE (JANUARY 14, 2011) TVN - Chilean authorities pulled the bodies of two French mountain climbers from a crevice near the summit of the Osorno volcano on Friday (January 14) after they fell during an excursion with three other people.
Authorities have identified Tomy Loreu and Armal Chavonnier as the two who died after falling into a crevice as their mountain climbing group neared the summit of the Osorno volcano, some 900 kilometers south of Santiago.According to Chilean authorities, the pair had fallen to a depth of some 200 meters.
"Five excursionists of French nationality climbed to the top of the Osorno Volcano. During their ascent, approximately at the height of 2,300 meters above sea level. Two of them fell into a crevasse, some 200 meters deep, and sadly, the two were found dead," police major Rodrigo Bravo said.
The bodies were taken to the Osorno morgue for autopsies and to await the arrival of family members.
