Renowned Kenyan polygamist, Asentus Akuku, who died earlier this month, leaves behind a legacy few men can match: more than 200 children and over a 100 wives.
HOMA BAY, KENYA, KENYA TELEVISION NETWORK -
Asentus Akuku, who has died aged 94, made headlines in his native Kenya after he married at least 100 wives and fathered more than 200 children in his life time.
Akuku, who was nicknamed 'Danger' on account of other men not being able to match his ability of wooing most of the girls in the village, died on October 3rd after he collapsed following a short illness.
His son, Tom Akuku told Kenyan TV that efforts to save him were complicated by the lack of a hospital intensive care bed.
"When they reached Kisumu, Aga Khan, they found out that they could not find space in the ICU, and then, because of that they then took him to the general hospital, and then, now when they wanted to admit him they found out that he had died."
Hundreds of Akuku's relatives have gathered at his village home in Kenya's Nyanza province, where funeral discussions are underway.
Polygamy is legal in Kenya, though the practice is not as widespread as it used to be. The practice is also considered a sign of wealth and status in some communities in the east African nation.
'Danger' was a wealthy man, running a company of taxi cabs and most of the stores in the village trading centre with his children working in the family business.
He will be remembered for building a school for his children and a church to accommodate his large family for Sunday service.
Danger's children said that the burial will most likely take place in November and will be strictly a family affair.
