SPAIN-BARCELONA CLASHES - Clashes between police and demonstrators broke out in Barcelona as Spanish workers staged a general strike on Thursday (March 29) to protest against labour reforms which the government declared "unstoppable."
Demonstrators overturned containers and set them alight in a central Barcelona avenue.Riot police used rubber bullets to disperse the demonstrators and confrontation between police and protesters broke out.
Several demonstrators were arrested and others were injured.
Emergency services arrived at the scene, Reuters footage showed an injured demonstrator being taken away on a stretcher.
Police also arrested a number of protesters in Madrid where tens of thousands have answered the call of the CCOO and UGT labour unions to join a demonstration on Thursday evening.
Strikers have promised a wave of protests to confront Mariano Rajoy's conservative government over reforms making it cheaper for companies to fire staff and dismantling a nationwide system of collective pay bargaining.
