Kenya-Wildebeests Migration -- Wildebeests fight their way across Mara River
KENYA-WILDERNEESTS MIGRATION - A desperate fight between wildebeests and Nile crocodiles was taking place on the Mara River that runs through Tanzania and Kenya.
More than 100,000 wildebeest gathered on the east side of the Mara River for a breathtaking river crossing at 11:00 (local time) on Saturday.
After several wildebeests successfully crossed the river, the whole army followed. In this process, a young wildebeest was captured by a huge Nile crocodile. The wildebeest struggled for some time but was finally dragged down into the river. The fight even disturbed a hippo family nearby.
On the other side of the river, the mother of the young wildebeest was waiting in vain for the arrival of her child. She finally had to give up and left with other wildebeests to continue their journey.
With only two wildebeests lost to crocodiles, most of the flock successfully reached the other side of the river and continued their migration after a brief rest.
Wildebeests are famous for their annual long-distance migration, which coincides with the annual pattern of rainfall and grass growth.
Nile crocodiles, the lord of the Mara River, are the natural enemy to the migrating wildebeests. Otherwise, they usually have little chance to capture large preys.
In addition to crocodiles, reckless African hippos also attack migrating wildebeests if the latter intrude upon their territory.
