China-Air Pollution/Beijing -- Beijing plans fewer vehicles on road during heavy air pollution
China Central Television (CCTV) - The number of vehicles allowed on Beijing's roads could be cut on days when the city suffers from heavy air pollution, according to a new regulation released by the municipal government on Saturday.
The Beijing Municipal Air Pollution Control Regulation draft says that a set number of vehicles won't be allowed on the roads during heavy air pollution to help protect the health of the city's residents.The draft also stipulates emergency preparation procedures, forecasts, warning alerts, and a response system during periods of heavy air pollution.
The municipal government will issue air pollution notices on severely polluted days and initiate emergency responses including suspending production at nearby factories, and reducing the number of vehicles on the city's road, according to the draft.
The regulation, jointly drafted by the municipal government and the city's people's congress, aims to solve the air pollution problems faced in the city recently.
Heavy smog covered China's capital for seven consecutive days last week, finally dispersing on Wednesday with the arrival of a cold front and stronger winds. However, the haze returned on Saturday, and the air quality in the city once again plummeted to dangerously low levels.
