South Korean unification ministry says the government will give $6.3 million U.S. dollars in humanitarian aid to North Korea, through the World Health Organization
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA (SEPTEMBER 2, 2013) (REUTERS) - The South Korean unification ministry said on Monday (September 2) the government has decided to give $6.3 million U.S. dollars in humanitarian aid toNorth Korea through the World Health Organization (WHO).
"The money to go to the World Health Organization (WHO) which will help repair medical facilities, train healthcare workers and give essential drugs to the Norththat can help all the people," said South Korean Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Hyung-suk.The South's government also plans to approve another $2.14 million U.S. dollars' worth of humanitarian aid from South Korean civic groups.
The United Nations has said it needs almost $100 million U.S. dollars to fund aid programs for the rest of 2013 in North Korea, where there are about 2.4 million very vulnerable people in need of regular food assistance.
The world body says almost a third of children under five-years-old in North Koreasuffer chronic malnutrition.
