Nigerians evacuated from Libya speak of horror as Gaddafi's forces try to push back a revolt.
ABUJA, NIGERIA (FEBRUARY 28, 2011) REUTERS - Nigerians evacuated from Libya on Monday (February 28) said supporters of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi were committing atrocities on the streets of the countries cities.
499 citizens were evacuated on Sunday (February 27) and a flight on Monday brought in another 500 people, many visibly shaken by the events in Tripoli.James Ugochuku, said he lived and worked in Tripoli until the revolution started. He added that many of his friends including some Nigerians had died in the uprising.
"Gaddafi must go down, Gaddafi is over. He is a monster....I have so many friends in Libya, they told me that they cannot speak because Gaddafi has killed their cousins and uncles," he said.
Thousands of Nigerians have sought work in Libya because they could not find employment back at home. One returnee called Prince Loko said he would never return.
"We were all slaves there, in the hands of the government over there. I thank God because I am free today and I am not going back to any Arab world. I will never travel to any Arab world again," he said.
Nigeria's national Emergency Management has said efforts were being made to bring back all 2000 citizens stranded in Libya.
