Switzerland-Somali Model -- Somali super model Waris Dirie talks about Somali woman status and tragedy
CCTV BEIJING - Drought and famine continue to grow in Somalia with the fate of 12 million people at stake. Waris Dirie is a refugee-turned super model, whose story lends a human face to an African tragedy. Her activism for the rights of women has been honored by world figures, including Nicolas Sarkozy (and Mikhail Gorba-chev.).
In an interview by CCTV reporter James Chau, Waris Dirie, a Somali super model, talks about her experience as a Somali woman who fled her country for a better life, and on how she thinks about the Somali drought and famine."Women are second-class citizens all around the world," said Waris Dirie in the interview. She then recalled her childhood memory as a Somali girl who suffered from child molestation. She said that child molestation is the worst and horrendous crime that can be done on human beings. Waris Dirie ran away from home in protest against the arranged and forced marriage by her father. "I know I have to die for my freedom," said Waris Dirie.
When talking about the recent drought and famine in her home country, Waris Dirie thinks that money donation should go straight to the Somali people, and the Somali people have to help themselves rather than waiting to be helped. According to Waris Dirie, it is the Somali people, the insiders who should come up a solution to tackle the problems in Somalia.
