CANCUN, QUINTANA ROO, MEXICO (JUNE 7, 2012)(REUTERS) - Former reality television show producer Bruce Beresford-Redman, on trial in Mexico for allegedly murdering his wife, appeared in court on Thursday (June 7).
Former reality show producer Bruce Beresford-Redman appears in Mexico during his trial for allegedly murdering his wife.
Beresford-Redman is accused of killing his wife, 41-year-old restaurant owner Monica Burgos, while the couple vacationed with their two children at a Cancun resort in April 2010. Burgos' body was found in a sewer pipe near the resort; prosecutors said that she appeared to have been strangled.
Beresford-Redman's attorney said that the former producer is confident he will eventually be exonerated.
"He's in a very good state of mind. He's happy. Our defence has been going well, the hearings have gone well. He's very positive. He knows that soon he'll get out of here," he said.
Prosecutors say hotel staff reported that the couple had a heated argument during their stay.
However, Beresford-Redman's key defence witness, another hotel employee, told the court last week that he saw the defendant acting normally with his children around the time of the grisly murder.
"We've only heard from one of the three witnesses. His testimony went well, and he said that he never saw Bruce or his children behaving strangely. That testimony from the hotel employee stopped the speculating from the prosecutors, who had continually asserted that the witness had seen Bruce acting oddly, and in strange situations. The complete opposite was true," Grajales Betancourt said.
Mexican prosecutors allege that Beresford-Redman dumped his wife's body after a violent fight and fled to the United States. He was arrested in Los Angeles in November 2010 and has maintained his innocence.
If convicted of murder, he faces 40 years to life in jail.
Beresford-Redman was a co-creator of the MTV show "Pimp My Ride" and a supervising producer of reality TV's "Survivor" from 2003-2004.
