A four-year old rape victim succumbs to injuries in a hospital in western India, after a fatal cardiac arrest.
NAGPUR, MAHARASHTRA, INDIA (APRIL 29, 2013) (ANI) - A four-year old rape victim succumbed to injuries in a hospital in westernNagpur city on Monday (April 29) India, after a fatal cardiac arrest.
According to police, two men lured the girl by giving her a chocolate, raped her and left her bleeding outside a farm on April 17.The girl was in coma ever since she was airlifted on April 20. The victim had suffered a severe damage to her brain and was on life support system and drugs.
The victim was from Seoni District in central Madhya Pradesh state and was undergoing treatment at a privately-run hospital in Nagpur.
Doctors said that the child died at 7.45 p.m. on Monday after all efforts to revive her had failed.
"At around 7:45 pm the rape victim was declared dead after suffering a cardiac arrest. In the evening health bulletin, we had told that the victim's condition was deteriorating. The patient died due to a cardiac arrest," he said.
The girl was kidnapped from her residence on April 17 and was apparently abandoned in the fields after being raped. She was found by some villagers on the morning of April 18.
Police has arrested both culprits.
Recently, the alleged rape of 5-year-old girl by a male neighbour in the New Delhitriggered a protest, reawakening concerns about safety for women and girls.
Earlier in December public outrage over the fatal gang rape of a woman in New Delhi in December forced the government into passing a new, tougher law to punish sex crimes and hold police and hospital authorities more responsible.
This includes sentences of up to two years in jail for police officials if they fail to register a complaint.
Brutal sex crimes are common in India, which has a population of 1.2 billion. New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures.
One in three rape victims in India are children, according to UNICEF. Child sex abuse was only outlawed last year under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
