Heavy snow, ice and freezing temperatures can't stop New Yorkers.
NEW YORK, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES (JANUARY 22, 2014) (REUTERS) - New Yorkers dug out from a storm that dumped nearly a foot (30 centimeters) of snow in Central Park on Wednesday (January 22).
At dawn, temperatures in New York were at 4 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 15 Celsius). Wind gusts over 30 miles per hour (48 km/h) were forecast for parts of the Atlantic coast. But the frigid, windy weather was not enough to keep many New Yorkers indoors.
In Central Park, joggers, skiers, and dog walkers enjoyed the fresh snow.
"I bring my dog out to off-leash hours in the park. And I think it's really beautiful. I don't know. I mean, it's cold, but I think it's really beautiful," said Rachel.
"I have to walk my dog. The show must go on and it's cold," admitted Hillary.
With schools and businesses open, New York City pushed toward normalcy.
New York City officials said their massive public transportation system, including subways, commuter trains and buses, was operating mostly on a normal schedule to help people make the cold and messy commute to work.
"I'm going to work right there and I'm freezing cold and I don't like it," said Ian from Hoboken.
"It's very, very cold out here. You need to bundle up. Have a good day," added Lisa.
As commuters braved the cold, city workers were busy clearing city streets and sidewalks with snowplows and shovels.
The brutal cold weather is expected to remain until the end of the week.
