Nigerian bakery, 'Cakes by Tosan' recently unveiled what creators called Africa's tallest cake. The 28-feet-high nine-tier cake was designed in line with a series of activities to mark the country's centenary celebration.
LAGOS, NIGERIA (MAY 16, 2013) (REUTERS) - Its being called Africa's Tallest Cake. Towering to the third floor of a mall in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos, this fruit cake was baked as an edible monument to Nigeria's 100 years as a nation.
Although it has not been confirmed as the "tallest cake" in Africa by record bodies like the Guinness book, the nine-tier cake with a 80 by 80 inch base and embellished with sugarcrafted decorations is being touted as a record for Nigeria, at least.Organizers also used the unveiling to hold a pricey back sale to raise money for the renovation of facilities at a public school in city.
The event came as good news to Nigerians who took part. There is an ongoing offensive on militant camps in the northeast of the country - the biggest on militant group Boko Haram, which for almost four years has tried to establish a breakaway Islamic state in Nigeria.
"This is coming at a time when we have not so good news, so when we see something that will cheer us on, we have to salute 'Cakes by Tosan'. They have really done Africa proud," said Kehinde GbeleyeCEO of local company Kogsy Sugarcraft.
The cake was created by "Cakes by Tosan", a Nigerian bakery.
Tosan Jemide, the company's creative director said the cake was an honor to the beauty and diversity ofNigeria and its people.
"Essentially, I got the inspiration from... first of all Nigeria is celebrating a hundred years centenary celebrations you know and wanting to come up with a design I thought you know, why do a regular kind of cake you know, come up with something that is about Nigeria also about Africa, that is global as well," he said.
The cake, which took three weeks to put together was taken down on Sunday (May 19) and distributed to children's homes across Lagos.
