Iran test fires a missile capable of reaching Israel on the opening day of a large military exercise. Andrew Raven reports.
IRAN-MISSILE LAUNCH - An Iranian missile lifts off into the night.
The launch comes on the first day of war games conducted by the Iranian military.
The rocket, called the Shabab 3, has been the source of consternation in the West.
With a range of 2,000km, it can reach Israel and American military bases in the Gulf.
But Iran's commanders say the Shahab 3 is meant only for defence - or what one called an "unexpected war".
Western nations have voiced concerns that Iran is developing nuclear weapons that could be placed on ballistic missiles.
But Tehran says its atomic research is strictly civilian.
