Video uploaded to the internet purports to show an armoured truck driving to a hospital in Aleppoand being blown up, causing a large explosion.
SAID TO BE SHOT IN ALEPPO, SYRIA (SAID TO BE SHOT ON DECEMBER 20, 2013) (SOCIAL MEDIA WEBSITE) - Video obtained from a social media website purportedly shows the bombing of a hospital in Aleppo on Friday (December 20).
The footage appeared to show a large armoured truck driving towards the al-Kendi hospital in the rebel-held northern city of Aleppo. The truck is seen driving towards the building and then a large explosion takes place.
Another video seems to show an armoured personnel carrier (APC) driving towards the partly collapsed hospital. Armed people dressed in dark clothing get out of the vehicle and enter the building.
Speakers on the videos explain that the explosion was a suicide attack carried out by the al Nusrafront. They do not explain why the hospital was targeted.
The al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front is arguably the most violent Sunni militant group fighting Syrian President Assad. The hardline Nusra Front is also one of the most powerful groups fighting alongside rebels trying to topple President Bashar al-Assad. Nusra fighters want to see a strict version of Islamic law imposed in Syria.
Reuters cannot independently verify the content of the videos.
The civil war in Syria has claimed the lives of well over 100,000 people since 2011 and driven millions into neighbouring countries.
