Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil predicts six more weeks of winter in the U.S. during Groundhog Day ceremony.
PUNXSUTAWNEY, PENNSYLVANIA, UNITED STATES (FEBRUARY 2, 2014) (PENNSYLVANIACABLE NETWORK) - Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter at the annual Groundhog Day ceremony in Pennsylvania on Sunday (February 2).
The crowd cheered and chanted "Phil, Phil" as president of Punxsutawney Groundhog ClubPresident Bill Deeley knocked on the groundhog's burrow and lifted the rodent was lifted out.Because Phil saw his shadow - the legend goes - there will be six more weeks of snow and freezing temperatures. If he did not, an early spring would have been expected.
"To the proper scroll which reads a Superbowl winner I will not predict, but my weather forecast you can not contradict, " Vice President of Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Jeff Lundy said as he was reading off a scroll during the rainy event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. "Why that's not a football, but my shadow I see, it's six more weeks of winter, it must be."
The crowd booed as the unfortunate news was revealed.
Groundhogs have been offering weather predictions in this tiny town since 1887.
The annual event, made even more popular by the 1993 film comedy "Groundhog Day" starringBill Murray, draws thousands of faithful followers from as far away as Australia and Russia. After the movie was released, record crowds numbering as high as 30,000 have been drawn to the event, the website says.
