Defence lawyer for former Hollywood producer Bruce Beresford-Redman accuses Mexican prosecutors of delay tactics in the Cancun murder trial of the U.S. citizen accused of killing his wife at a beach resort.
CANCUN, QUITANA ROO, MEXICO (MAY 09, 2013) (REUTERS) - The former producer of the reality TV show "Survivor" Bruce Beresford-Redman appeared in a Cancun court on Thursday (May 09) as his defence team step up their legal efforts to exonerate him of charges he murdered his wife in 2010.
The Hollywood producer is accused of the brutal killing of his wife of 11 years,Monica Burgos, whose naked and beaten body was found in a sewer at a Cancunhotel in April 2010, three days after he reported her missing.Arguing the case against his client does not stack up, defence lawyer Jaime Cancino accused prosecutors of delay tactics during the controversial trial.
"He's exasperated. He sees that nothing is moving, that everything the prosecution is doing is delaying his trial, therefore he is exasperated. Also, he's seen and understands that the accusation has been destroyed right now, he doesn't understand why he's still in jail," he said.
Mexican prosecutors allege that Beresford-Redman dumped his wife's body after a violent fight and fled to the United States. He was arrested in Los Angeles in November 2010 and has maintained he is innocent.
Beresford-Redman appeared during court proceedings inside a small metal holding cell.
If convicted of murder, the U.S. citizen faces 40 years to life in jail.
Beresford-Redman was a co-creator of the MTV show "Pimp My Ride" and a supervising producer of reality TV's "Survivor" from 2003-2004
