UK-Strike/Olympics -- Cleaners protest low compensation during London Olympics
CCTV BEIJING - Cleaners of the London underground system began a 48-hour strike in pay dispute beginning on the morning of August 9, local time, three days before the closing ceremony of the Olympics, according to local media reports.
The protesting cleaners are from two private contractors taking charge of the cleaning works of London underground railway, reports say.
The cleaners claimed that they are underpaid for the busy work they have done since the opening of the Olympic Games. They planned to stage demonstrations outside main underground railway stations including the Stratford station near the Olympic Park and Stadium.
However, volunteers and staff working at Stratford station said they have not seen the strike happen and the garbage bins placed on the square are regularly cleaned despite the busy traffic.
Some cleaners working in the Stratford station said though they have heard about the strike, cleaners in the station are still doing their jobs.
London transportation authorities said the underground system of London has not been affected by the strike, which will last to 5:30 local time on Saturday morning.
