Two Damien Hirst artworks believed to be worth over $50,000, are stolen from a London gallery.
LONDON, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM (DECEMBER 11, 2013)(ITN) - Two artworks by the renowned British artist Damien Hirst have been stolen from a Londongallery.
The pieces, which feature multi-coloured dots and are signed by the artist himself, were taken when the gallery was broken into in the early hours of Monday morning (December 9).They are believed to have a combined value of 33,000 pounds ($54,000).
Hirst burst onto the scene as unofficial leader of the "Young British Artist" movement in the 1990s, and remains one of the most divisive figures in the art world today.
His "For the Love of God" (2007), a skull encrusted with 8,601 diamonds which sold for $100 million, and "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living" (1991), a dead shark floating in formaldehyde, have been both derided as stunts and heralded as groundbreaking.
Since 1986, Hirst also produced a series he calls "spot paintings" -- canvases featuring grids of dots of various colours and sizes.
