Munich worshippers express a lack of understanding for the Pope's resignation, speculating about a "deeper reason" behind the move and saying the only excuse should be illness.
MUNICH, GERMANY (FEBRUARY 11, 2013) (REUTERS) - The reasons for the Pope's resignation could be deeper than what people are currently told and the only excuse to step down from the post is illness, worshippers said in Munich on Monday (February 11).
"It's unique in the terms of the papacy so it could be deeper than what we have been told at the moment," said Ronald Dunn who was visiting from Scotland.Andrea Wormsdorf was adamant and said "I could only accept (his resignation) if he were ill and could therefore no longer carry out his post. But I can't accept any other reason, none whatsoever."
Another worshipper, Gertrud Wiebarth said she would only accept his resignation "for reasons of illness. Other than that, is it not theoretically impossible for the Pope to resign voluntarily?," Wiebarth asked.
Pope Benedict on Monday said he would resign on Feb 28 because he no longer had the strength to fulfill the duties of his office.
