Rescue workers are at the scene of a derailed Canadian train outside Burlington, Ontario where some of the 75 passengers remain trapped inside.
BURLINGTON, ONTARIO, CANADA (FEBRUARY 26, 2012) (CTV) - A passenger train derailed near Burlington in southern Ontario, Canada on Sunday (February 26), killing at least one person, according to media reports.
The VIA Rail train, which was traveling from Niagara Falls to Toronto with about 75 passengers, derailed at 1530 EST (2030 GMT), according to Postmedia News. The train was reportedly leaking fuel after the derailment, Postmedia News said.
Aerial images show rescue workers climbing into some of the derailed cars that have been thrown onto their sides as they attempt to rescue trapped passengers within as well as rescue helicopters waiting to transport any wounded found in the wreckage.
VIA Rail, which is owned by the Canadian government, was not immediately available for comment. A spokesman for the Halton Regional Police was unable to provide any details on the derailment.
