An army of termites sneaks into a wooden drawer belonging to an elderly lady and eats its way through 400,000 RMB (65,210 US dollars) in southern China, state media reports.
FOSHAN, GUANGDONG PROVINCE, CHINA (CCTV) - An elderly lady in southern China would never have thought she could lose her money to termites. But that is exactly what happened.
The 400,000 RMB ($65,210 U.S. dollars) were given to the woman, whom state television CCTV did not identify, by her children six months ago.Instead of depositing the money in the bank, she wrapped it up in a plastic bag and stored it in a wooden drawer in her house, according to CCTV.
The unlucky lady did not notice that her cash had been ruined by termites until this April when she opened the drawer to take some money to redecorate her house, it added.
She then took the banknotes, which had all been damaged, to a local bank in the hope that they could be still identified.
After several rounds of scanning and comparing, the bank identified around 340,000 RMB (around $55,430 U.S. dollars).
However, the woman is left with a loss of 15 per cent of her savings, CCTV reported.
