Sweden's Princess Madeleine weds New York banker at a ceremony in the royal chapel.
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN (JUNE 8, 2013) (SVT) - Sweden's Princess Madeleine married banker fiance on Saturday (June 8) at a wedding attended by European royals and socialites from across the Atlantic.
The 30-year-old Princess Madeleine married Christopher O'Neill, who was born and raised in Britain but also has U.S. citizenship, at a ceremony in the Royal Chapel inside the Royal Palace in Stockholm. Some 600 guests attended the wedding at the Royal Palace and several hundred people waited outside the palace to catch a glimpse of the newlyweds.
After the ceremony and a 21-gun salute, a horse and carriage took the couple to a banquet hosted by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.
Madeleine has been living with 38-year old O'Neill in New York. After the wedding O'Neill will remain an American citizen and intends to continue his business activities as before. Since a member of the royal family should be a Swedish citizen and not hold a position of responsibility within business, O'Neill cannot hold the title H.R.H. Prince of Sweden or Duke of Gastrikland and Halsingland.
He will therefore remain a private citizen and not be granted royal rank.
The monarchy enjoys fairly wide support among the public in otherwise egalitarianSweden. Madeleine will continue to live in New York where she works at a children's charity founded by her mother.
