Mother giraffe gives birth to a rare set of twin calves in northern China.
SHIJIAZHUANG CITY, HEBEI PROVINCE, CHINA. DECEMBER 16, 2010 CCTV - A giraffe in a Chinese zoo gave birth to a healthy pair of giraffe twins, a rare occurrence for the species, local news reported on Saturday (December 18) The mother, named Bei Bei, delivered male giraffe twins on Thursday (December 16) in a zoo in northern China's Hebei Province after over an hour and a half in labour, state media reported.
For a week prior to the delivery, the mother's bulging abdomen prevented her from lying down, and zoo workers were on hand to assist the mother through the difficult labor, state media said.
According to the zoo representatives, the calves measured 1.8 and 1.9 meters tall and were able to stand and walk.
The pair represent the first set of twin giraffes born in China.
