A Stockholm suburb is left damaged and burnt after a night of rioting.
HUSBY, STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN (MAY 20, 2013) (TV4) - Youths set fire to cars and buildings and threw rocks at police in overnight riots in Husby in northern Stockholm.
The disturbances started late on Sunday (May 19) evening and continued throughout the night. Some forty masked youths set fire to several cars, a school, a launderette and parking garage with around 50 cars.
Resident Aso Hossein had his car parked in the garage and said he did not know whether it was among the vehicles that were burnt.
"I am shocked. I don't know what's happening. My car is in the garage," he said.
Several windows in central Husby were smashed and residents living close by were evacuated for a few hours.
Police were met by rock-throwing youths and three police officers were slightly injured.
The head of the rescue service, Kjell Berglof, said a threatening atmosphere had impeded their arrival at the scene.
"It is frustrating to always need the help of the police in order to arrive at the scene quickly," Berglof said.
Police, who have made no arrests, say they don't know what caused the rioting, but local media reports said it could be connected to an incident last week in which police shot a machete-wielding man in the suburb.
