A British teacher says he believes the British government paid bribes to officials to facilitate the evacuate of British citizens out of Libya.
VALLETTA, MALTA (FEBRUARY 25, 2011) REUTERS - A British national evacuated from Libya by the British government suspected that a bribe paved the way for his departure.
Sam Dewhirst, a teacher from Leeds in the UK, spoke about the situation at the airport in Tripoli after he had been flown to Malta by the British government."The situation at the airport is hellish. When we got in at 6 o' clock in the morning it was relatively calm, but that still meant that the departure hole was still full of people. I think our people probably smoothed away with a few bribes to get us in, to get us preferential treatment," he said.
He describes the Libyan people as fantastic and said he felt for them in their current situation.
"My heart goes out to them. There are some good friends of ours out in the street, not only fighting for their freedom, they are fighting for their survival now I hope the British government, the world governments do all they can to let this thing run its course, but also to level the plane field," he said.
British Prime Minister said on Friday that the Government was doing everything it could to get hundreds of British nationals out of Libya as the country descended further into violence and bloodshed.
