U.S. ambassador arrives at foreign ministry after being summoned by the German Foreign Minister over suspicions of American tapping of German chancellor Merkel's mobile phone.
BERLIN, GERMANY (OCTOBER 24, 2013) (REUTERS) - The United States' ambassador to Germany, John B. Emerson, arrived at the German foreign ministry on Thursday (October 24) afternoon after being summoned by the country's foreign minister to discuss information obtained by Berlin that the U.S. may have monitored German Chancellor Angela Merkel's mobile phone.
The move comes a day after Merkel called President Barack Obama to demand immediate clarification and told him if such surveillance had taken place it amounted to a "grave breach of trust".
