Four people are shot by a man who opened fire outside a law firm and a Walmart store in Greenville, North Carolina.
GREENVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA, UNITED STATES (JUNE 21, 2013) (NBC) - A man armed with a shotgun opened fire outside a law firm and a Walmart store in Greenville, North Carolina, on Friday (June 21), shooting four people before police shot him, the city's police chief Hassan Aden said.
One person was shot while sitting in his car outside the law firm, and three others were struck after the suspect walked across the street and fired his gun in a Walmart parking lot.The suspect then fired one round at officers who had responded to the scene. As they chased him, he leveled his gun and was shot by police.
Greenville police chief Hassan Aden said the shooter was carrying a "significant" amount of ammunition.
"I personally saw multiple shotgun rounds, I don't know how many, but enough to do significant damage," Aden said.
The shooter and his four victims were all taken to hospital, Aden said.
The shooter's identity and his motive remain unknown.
The chief said the quick response by police likely prevented a much larger crime scene.
A spokeswoman for Walmart said no one was shot inside the store and all associates were safe after what appeared to be a random shooting involving several businesses.
