Nicaragua's consul to New York is found dead with his throat cut in a Bronx apartment
USA-NYC DIPLOMAT DEATH - The Bronx building where the body of Nicaragua's consul to New York was found with his throat slashed.
Officials say 34-year-old Cesar Mercado was deceased when police arrived, but had no further details.
Local media, citing police sources, reported a knife was recovered at the scene.
Mercado worked in a Manhattan office located near the United Nations headquarters.
His death comes as the U.N. General Assembly is meeting.
Neighbors gathered outside the scene of Mercado's killing were shocked to hear of his death.
NEIGHBOR, VERONICA CASTRO, SAYING:
"We saw him around this time yesterday. He went up with us on the stairs, I mean the elevator, after school."
NEIGHBOR, JEANETTE SOTO, SAYING:
"Oh my God. I can't believe it. I hope they find this killer, or whoever did this to him, because it's not fair. This is not fair."
Officials from Nicaragua's U.N. mission, as well as the Foreign Ministry, confirmed Mercado was the victim, but could not offer anymore information.
