Blustery winds blow over the National Christmas tree in Washington, D.C.
WASHINGTON, D.C, UNITED STATES (FEBRUARY 19, 2011) NBC - Heavy winds toppled the National Christmas tree in Washington D.C. on Saturday (February 19).
The 42-foot tall Colorado blue spruce was planted on the Ellipse, just behind the White House and had served as the Nation Christmas Tree since 1978.
National Park Service spokesman Bill Line said there were no injuries.
"We're glad that this took place at a time when people were away from the tree. We're saddened that this happened but as I say we know this is going to happen. It will happen with every tree and as I say we will be ready to go for next December," Line said.
Park officials have already identified a new tree that will be brought to Washington, D.C. in the next couple of weeks.
