The head of Hamas has hailed the Egyptian revolution as the greatest popular revolt in the history of Egypt and of humanity saying it has thrust the country once more into a leadership role in the Middle East.
YARMOUK CAMP (NEAR DAMASCUS), SYRIA (FEBRUARY 19, 2011) REUTERS - Hamas was full of praise for the Egyptian revolution on Saturday (February 19) saying it had been swift, peaceful and had driven by all sections of the country's society.
"There is no doubt that the great Egyptian revolution is a unique one. It may be considered as the greatest peaceful popular revolution in the history of Egypt or may be in the history of humanity with its popularity, peacefulness, great crowds and the speed of its achievement. May the hands of Egypt's people-- men and women, old and children, Muslims and Christians--be blessed," Hamas Leader Khaled Meshaal said in a speech he delivered during the opening of a centre for Palestinian Women and Heritage in Syria.State television reported that Egyptian authorities would re-open the Rafah border crossing into the Gaza Strip for humanitarian cases and to allow Palestinians stuck in Egypt to return to the enclave.
The Rafah crossing links Egypt's Sinai Peninsula to the Gaza Strip, which is run by the Hamas Islamist group. It was the first time the crossing had been opened since President Hosni Mubarak was toppled a week ago.
His administration cooperated with Israel in enforcing a blockade on the territory, building an underground barrier to try to prevent smuggling through tunnels and opening the passenger crossing only occasionally.
