Myanmar-Obama/Visit -- Obama, first sitting U.S. president to visit Myanmar in Myanmar-U.S. relations
China Central Television (CCTV) - U.S. President Barack Obama Monday met with his Myanmar counterpart U Thein Seinat the Yangon Region Parliament Building.
The two leaders topped their discussions on matters of bilateral relations and Myanmar's democratic reform, according to sources.
About one thousand people waiting outside the Mingaladon airport to welcome the newly re-elected U.S. president, who is on a six-hour working visit.As part of his four-day Southeast Asian tour to Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia, which started Saturday, Obama flew over from Thailand after completing his first leg of the tour.
Obama is the first sitting U.S. president to have ever come to the Southeast Asian nation in the history of Myanmar-U.S. relations.
The welcome ceremony was middle-sized as compared with those of earlier this year, according to participants.
"We are glad to greet Obama here because it is a good opportunity to develop our local tourism," said U Tunaylin, a local resident.
Greeting Obama at the airport were Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin, Yangon Region Chief Minister U Myint Swe and U.S. Ambassador to Myanmar Dereck Mitchell.
Obama's visit came as bilateral relations is warming up following the United Stateseasing its sanctions in response to a wave of reforms that has been underway since UThein Sein took office on March 30, 2011.
Concluding the visit, Obama is to proceed to the 21st East Asia Summit slated for Tuesday in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
