A military strike on Syria will threaten Israel's security, an Iranian lawmaker says after meeting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus.
DAMASCUS, SYRIA (SEPTEMBER 1, 20013) (SYRIAN TV) - An Iranian lawmaker said on Sunday (September 1) any military strike against Syria will spread to the region, threatening Israel's security.
Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the head of Iran's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission made the comments after meeting President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus."We think that any military aggression against Syria will spread to the entire Middle East and burn it and before anything else, it will threaten Israel's security. If a war took place, Israel would definitely be defeated," Boroujerdi told a news conference in Damascus.
Boroujerdi said the days of "changing regimes through power" were over, and that the failure of theUnited States to do so proved the policy had failed.
During his meeting with Boroujerdi, Assad said Syria was capable of confronting any external attack after U.S. President Barack Obama said there should be a military strike on Syria.
"Syria ... is capable of confronting any external aggression," state television quoted Assad as saying at a meeting with Iranian officials.
"The American threats of launching an attack against Syria will not discourage Syria away from its principles ... or its fight against terrorism supported by some regional and Western countries, first and foremost the United States of America."
Syria generally refers to rebels fighting to topple Assad as "terrorists".
U.S. President Barack Obama on Saturday (August 31) formally asked for Congressional approval for a military strike against Syria.
Obama will seek lawmakers' consent before giving the order to strike against Assad.
The move makes an anticipated strike not within days as was widely expected, but in mid-September at the earliest and would come after the U.S. blamed Assad's forces for killing some 1,400 Syrian civilians in a chemical weapons attack last month.
