VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA (JUNE 6, 2012) (CBC) - Packages containing a human hand and foot were delivered to schools in western Canada on Tuesday (June 5) as the suspect in a cannibalistic murder and dismemberment told German police he would not fight a Canadian extradition request.
Packages containing a human hand and foot are delivered to two schools in western Canada. A police spokesman says it's not yet known if the case is related to the murder and dismemberment of a Chinese student in Montreal.
There was no immediate evidence to link the two parcels sent to Vancouver to Luka Rocco Magnotta, who is wanted in Canada on charges of killing and dismembering a Chinese student, then posting a video of the crime online.
But Vancouver police investigator Warren Lemcke said local police were in contact with the authorities in Montreal, where police say a foot and a hand are among the body parts still missing after the gruesome murder of Jun Lin, 32.
"I can't link it to anything right now. As we progress in the investigation, we will provide as much information as we can. We have liaised with Montreal, and we will liaise with any other police agencies that we need to in the course of the investigation," Lemcke told reporters.
Vancouver School Board spokesman Kurt Heinrich said school officials are trying to maintain a sense of calm around the students.
"This is a really traumatic or difficult situation for absolutely everybody and that we're doing our best to try and make sure that our students are not negatively impacted as best as we can. It's obviously a very tricky thing to do, but we want to really try and hammer home a calm - for people to have a calm perspective on this where possible," Heinrich said.
One foot and one hand were received by mail at the headquarters of political parties in Ottawa last week, while Lin's torso was found in an abandoned suitcase in a garbage strewn alley behind Magnotta's Montreal apartment.
Magnotta, 29, who has a bizarre internet trail as a gay escort, a bisexual porn star and alleged kitten killer, was arrested in a Berlin Internet cafe on Monday (June 4) after an international manhunt. He had been reading articles online about the manhunt.
