An inquest begins into the killing of British soldier Lee Rigby on a London street.
LONDON, ENGLAND, UK (BBC/ITNHELICOPTER) - An inquest began on Friday (May 31) into the killing of a British soldier on a London street.
Drummer Lee Rigby was killed close to his army barracks in Woolwich, southeastLondon, on Wednesday (May 22) by two men who ran him down in a car and then attacked him with knives and a meat cleaver.The pair told shocked bystanders they were acting in revenge for British participation in wars in Muslim countries.
Late on Wednesday (May 29), police charged 22-year-old Michael Adebowale with Rigby's murder.
Adebowale was charged shortly after leaving hospital, where he had spent the week after being shot by police.
Adebowale was arrested at the scene of the attack after being shot and detained by police. He was also charged with possession of a firearm.
A second man, Michael Adebolago, remains under arrest in connect with the incident and is in a stable condition in hospital.
Rigby, a 25-year-old veteran of the Afghan war, was married and had a two-year-old son.
In tributes to the dead soldier, officers said he was an accomplished machine gunner who had served with distinction in Afghanistan, Germany and Cyprus.
At the time of his murder, he was with a recruiting group encouraging young people to join the army.
A post-mortem gave the cause of his death as 'multiple incised wounds'.
